Liverpool are in a three-way fight with Chelsea and Barcelona for Celta Vigo’s exciting young midfielder Gabri Veiga, according to a report in The Guardian.
The Reds are on the verge of completing the signing of Alexis Mac Allister, who completed a medical earlier today ahead of an official announcement tomorrow.
However, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner all leaving the club when their contracts expire at the end of the month, Jurgen Klopp is well aware that more new arrivals are needed in order to refresh an ageing midfield squad.
And Celta Vigo’s in-demand Spanish midfielder Gabri Veiga fits the bill perfectly.
An attack-minded midfielder with an eye for goal, Veiga performed heroics to help Celta Vigo avoid relegation last season, and his brace against Barcelona in the final league game brought him to the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
At just 21 years of age, Veiga has emerged as one of the best young midfielders in Europe. And with a rumoured release clause of just €40m, Veiga could prove to be the steal of the summer.
Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona are all reported to be keeping a close eye on developments, while Newcastle have also been credited with an interest in the young midfielder.
Chelsea, Barcelona and Newcastle have the advantage of being able to offer Champions League football, but Klopp will hope the lure of playing at Anfield — and the emergence of former Celta Vigo academy player Stefan Bajcetic — will be enough to convince Veiga to become a part of Klopp’s midfield rebuild.
